Abstract | We carried out experiments with a reading test to evaluate the readability of E-paper with built-in light, reflective e-paper and ordinary paper text under various conditions of contrast ratios with different age groups. We set the contrast ratio in three levels (Low, Medium and High) for backgrounds. The subjects were divided into three groups by age: Young, Middle aged, and Elderly people. This study found that contrast ratio of the text of each device affected the readability of all ages, and had an impact on elderly people more than the other age groups, and the readability of E-paper was affected by age more than the readability of the paper text. Furthermore, this study suggested that the light source of built-in light E-paper caused a decrease in the readability at the low contrast ratio condition. |

Abstract | When foreigners visit Japan, they may face problems due to differences in medical culture and customs with Japanese medical staffs. In order to mitigate the difficulties, we propose two types of applications for the foreigners and Japanese medical staffs. The one is e-learning materials about medical system and customs in Japan, especially which foreign patients should pay attention when they visit to hospitals or clinics. Also, a mobile software is proposed, which can be used to inform the patient’s needs to Japanese doctors effectively in the process of receiving medical treatment. Usability tests with foreign participants using the applications showed the effectiveness and the issues in real situations. |

Abstract | The objective of this study is to monitor the changes in physiological index. We measured the Alpha Attenuation Coefficient (AAC), High Frequency Component (HF) and oxygenated hemoglobin (oxyHb) as objective parameters and RAS (Roken Arousal Scale) as subjective parameters of experimental participants while performing simple tasks related to motor skills, which is necessary for a safe driving. The oxyHb signal was monitored from the frontal association and somatosensory areas using near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). NIRS can measure changes in brain hemodynamics during tasks noninvasively and unconstrained. Experimental results showed the value of oxyHb and AAC increased. On the other hand, HF and tracking error decreased when experimental participants were exposed to body sensory vibration. From these findings, we suggested that body sensory vibration stimuli were valid for monotonous work for a relatively. In conclusion, we could show the usability of body sensory vibration stimuli for monotonous work such as UniMove and it influence autonomic and central nervous system. |

Abstract | Mobile devices are used by a wide range of people, from young to elderly. Compared with the young, the elderly are more likely to suffer from eye diseases such as cataracts. One survey found that 66-83% of people in their 60s had cataracts. In this study, we focused on the effects of contrast ratios between characters and background color and cataracts on the readability of e-book readers. We evaluated the readability of e-books and ordinary paper text in participants with various levels of cataract cloudiness severity. We used three devices, Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, Sony Reader and plain paper. The experimental task required participants read silently the texts displayed on the devices. In the experiments, we asked the participants to evaluate the readability with different contrast ratios. The results of the experiment showed that the subjective evaluations decreased as the contrast ratios became lower with all devices. We found that readability was influenced by both cataract cloudiness and the contrast ratio. |
